What the Panchangam timings mean
What is Nalla Neram?
Nalla Neram is the auspicious part of the day for starting new things. Tamil families traditionally begin travel, new work, money matters and important meetings during this time.
What is Gowri Nalla Neram?
The Gowri Panchangam divides the day and the night into eight parts each. Amirtham, Uthiyogam, Laabam, Dhanam and Sugam are good periods; Soram, Rogam and Visham are periods to avoid. The good periods are called Gowri Nalla Neram.
What is Rahu Kalam?
Rahu Kalam is an inauspicious period of about one and a half hours every day. It is traditionally avoided for new beginnings. Its time changes with the weekday, and shifts by a few minutes from city to city because it is calculated from local sunrise.
What is Yamagandam?
Yamagandam is another inauspicious period of about one and a half hours each day. Like Rahu Kalam, people traditionally avoid starting auspicious events, journeys or new ventures during this time.
What is Kuligai?
It is believed that whatever is done during Kuligai will happen again. So people use it for good things they want repeated, such as buying gold or repaying a loan, and avoid it for things like borrowing money.
What is Chandrashtamam?
Chandrashtamam is when the Moon passes through the eighth rasi from your birth rasi. It comes once a month for about two and a quarter days. People traditionally avoid big decisions and new beginnings on these days.
What is Thithi?
A Thithi is a lunar day, worked out from the distance between the Sun and the Moon. A month has 30 Thithis: 15 in the waxing phase (Valarpirai) and 15 in the waning phase (Theipirai).
What is Nakshatram?
The day's Nakshatram is the star the Moon is passing through that day. There are 27 Nakshatrams. It is one of the main things checked when choosing a day for auspicious events.
What are Yogam and Karanam?
Yogam (27 types) and Karanam (11 types) are two of the five parts of the Panchangam. Thithi, Vaaram (weekday), Nakshatram, Yogam and Karanam together make the "five limbs", which is what Panchangam means.
What is Soolam?
Soolam is the direction to avoid travelling in on a given day. If the journey cannot be avoided, the custom is to take the day's parigaram (remedy item) before leaving.
What are Amavasai and Pournami?
Amavasai is the new moon day, when the Moon is not visible. It is the traditional day for honouring ancestors (Tharpanam). Pournami is the full moon day, favoured for Girivalam, fasting and temple worship.
What is Pradosham?
Pradosham is the evening of the 13th Thithi (Thrayodasi) in both the waxing and waning phases. It is a special time to worship Lord Shiva and Nandi, and comes twice a month.
